The Box Boosh Finds Himself In

Oh what a fine mess we find ourselves in. If you have been wondering why Boosh is delaying his “speech to the nation” on whatever new course “he” chooses for Iraq, wonder no more. The cat is now out of the bag, and I will try to explain it to you.

A Call From the King

On November 22, 2006, the creepy VEEP Dick Cheney received a call ordering him to a meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Though not many people on earth have the ability to tell Cheney what to do, much less when to do it, the Saudi Royal Family is the exception to this rule. This was not a request for a meeting, but an order for him to get his butt to Saudi Arabia, NOW. The King himself wanted to chat. Therefore, in a little less than 3 hours Cheney was aboard a private jet headed for Riyadh. There were no stops along the way, no itinerary listed, no public notices of the trip, nothing else on the agenda. You don’t even need a bag, he was told; just get your ass to Saudi Arabia. You won’t be here long. So he did go to the desert as ordered, and he did not stay long.

Upon his arrival, it soon became apparent that this was the Saudi version of taking Booshco out behind the woodshed. In no uncertain terms, Cheney was essentially told the following.

1) You invaded Iraq after we told you not to.

2) You deposed Saddam Hussein after we told you that the repercussions would be worse than any evil Hussein could possibly inflict on the Iraqi people.

3) You now have a book from the Iraq Study Group suggesting that you get out of Iraq and leave the mess you created unattended.

4) You WILL NOT LEAVE IRAQ.

So, should you ignore us again, these will be the consequences.

1) Your 80 percent plan that we hear you are considering will not be allowed to happen. (this is the plan floated that suggests that 80% of Iraq—Shiites and Kurds-- will be appeased, while 20%--Sunnis-- will be left out of the mix)

2) We will fully fund the Sunni insurgency already in Iraq.

3) We will send additional fighters into Iraq to help prevent the inevitable slaughter of the remaining minority Sunni’s that will occur should you leave.

4) We will drop the price of oil to limits unseen for many years, (ouch) thus taking the cash cow away from your big oil buddies and perhaps even putting them out of business in the process.

Now, get back on the plane and go pass the word to Boosh that you are not leaving Iraq in the mess it is currently in. We will not stand by and watch our Sunni brothers be sacrificed for what we told you not to do in the first place. Get it done, and get it done NOW. So Cheney did leave, and he did deliver the message to Boosh.

Meanwhile, Back At Home

Shortly after Cheney’s little trip to Saudi Arabia, on November 29, Nawaf Obaid wrote an editorial that was published in the Washington Post. Obaid was a Saudi “consultant” at the time, and wrote that Saudi Arabia would back the Sunni’s in Iraq should we leave and that they would then drop the price of oil. Though it is unclear whether the Royal Family had any knowledge of this article beforehand, (ha-ha) Obaid was fired immediately after it was published. Maybe he jumped the gun and put it in the press before the Royal Family had the opportunity to deliver the exact same message in person to Cheney, I don’t know. It doesn’t matter anyway. The point is that what he wrote is exactly what they told Cheney they will do. Isn’t it shocking that the mainstream media never picked up on the editorial and barely mentioned the Cheney trip? Hardly, their corporations are some of the ones benefiting most from the obscene big oil profits.

Also, on Monday of this week, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, Turki as-Faisal, inexplicably quit his post, basically without notice, and returned home. It was said that he “wanted to spend more time with his family,” along with some suggestions that his brother is ill and he may want to take over his post, even some rumors that he was fired. But, this is not how things are done in the diplomatic world. Ambassadors don’t leave mostly friendly countries essentially in the dark of the night without announcement, with no successor in place and without informing the host country of future plans. What this means in Cyclone English is that the Royal Family is pissed and they are showing that they are not playing with these idiots anymore. Now that we have laid the background, let’s move to the actions of Boosh of late.

Since the Cheney trip, many things have occurred in the world of the Boosh. The long awaited Iraq Study Group has announced its findings, a rather unpleasant result for Boosh. Side one of the box has been erected. Seventy three percent of the American people have said that they support the ISG findings, and want a way out of Iraq as soon as possible. Another wall goes up. Most long time Republican supporters of Boosh, both in and out of Congress have realized that the shit just ain’t working in Iraq and are demanding change immediately. Side three complete. Boosh has promised the American people that he will listen to many people and make a major speech (I can hardly wait) before Christmas announcing “the new way forward in Iraq,” something that the American people recently demanded at the ballot box. All four walls of the box are now in place. So, how does a Boosh begin to tear down the enclosure he finds himself surrounded by?

First, he lamely said that he will not be “pushed” into hurrying his speech, since it’s so profoundly important, (profound and Boosh should not be used in the same context, I know) so he delays it until after the first of the year. His reasoning is suspect at best, absurd in reality. Boosh said that he wanted to give new Defense Secretary Robert Gates time to study the ISG proposal. Since Gates was a leading member of the Study Group before agreeing to become the new Secretary of Defense, it is unthinkable that he is not familiar with what it says. He is, after all, a pretty smart guy.

Second, he spends a week or two running around interviewing everyone from retired Generals to White House cooks trying to find someone, anyone, who disagrees with the view that we should leave Iraq in a timely manner. Outside of John McCain and a few others, he’s not having much success at that.

Now, he is allegedly pondering following the McCain proposal of increasing troop strength though it is virtually unanimous that there is no military solution to the Iraq debacle. Sending in 40-50,000 more troops will not save the place, and we would have to scrounge to find that many troops to send. Some men and women would have to be sent to Iraq for the fifth or sixth time for this to be possible, and that is frankly unconscionable. Not that three or four such trips is any less revolting, mind you. He might find that the American people, who want us out of Iraq, might not take kindly to him sending more troops in.

What is a Boosh To Do?

Incompetence does not begin to cover what this man has done to this nation. He appears to be as worried about his “legacy” as he is about anything else. (I have an idea on how to save his legacy, but that is for another post) I wrote a very long time ago that he screws up EVERYTHING he touches, and that has not changed one iota. Iraq is the biggest disaster in American history; I don’t think that is even arguable anymore. His base has left him over this war, and those of us who consider ourselves progressives were never with him in the beginning. In short, this man is a mentally ill, dangerous imbecile.

I find the things that he says to be very telling. Just yesterday he said, and I’m paraphrasing here. “We will not leave Iraq until the mission is complete. The Iraqi people want to be free. How do I know that? Because the people spoke during the elections, while electing a democratic government.” Isn’t it interesting that he uses the voice of the people to justify staying in Iraq, yet totally ignores the voice of the people who allegedly elected him when they say it’s time to get out? He uses polls and opinions very selectively it seems, but never uses them when it involves the voices of the American people. Those voices are totally ignored, regardless of how rational they may be.

A while back Boosh said that “the people have spoken,” in reference to the US elections. That doesn’t matter in the least to him, but someone else has spoken as well, the Saudi Royal Family. And, trust me, the fact that they spoke carries a whole lot more weight than anything 300 million Americans could ever say. The threat of dropping the price of a barrel of oil to 1970 levels is unthinkable to Boosh and his buddies. This war that is about oil and nothing but oil, always has been and always will be. How many American lives are worth a barrel of oil? Sadly, we are finding out the answer to that very question.

What are the American People to Do?

Unless we do something drastic, we will not be leaving Iraq anytime soon, regardless of what the ISG, the military advisors, the generals on the ground, you, Cyclone, or God himself says. We will lose many more soldiers, tens of thousands more Iraqi’s will be blown up, and the end result will be the same. We will have still lost the war and the Middle East will never be the same.

It is time for a revolt in this country. A revolt of massive proportions. When Boosh refuses to follow the recommendations of every rational person he speaks to and continues a stay the course policy in a loser of a war, it is time to do something. When Boosh bows to the Saudi Royal Family and continues to kill both American kids and Iraqi citizens at the rate of hundreds per day, it’s time to do something.

Here’s what I say should happen. Let’s line Pennsylvania Ave. with 50 million Americans and refuse to leave until the last soldier is out of Iraq. We’ll call it the World’s Largest Tailgate Party. They can’t do anything besides lock a few of us up. Let the Saudi’s drop the price of oil, we’ll all benefit from that in the short term. In the longer term, it will force us to do what we have to do anyway, which is use our innovation to live our lives without the benefit of having foreign oil. We have the technology, we have the brainpower, and we have the manpower. What we lack is the willpower. Does anyone have any idea how to motivate 50 million people to leave their own little box that they’ve constructed for themselves? If so, please speak up. Time is short.

Well, it is for sure I haven't heard anything at all about this. The appearance from your post is that big oil has won again.

Indeed what is Boosh going to do? If they keep on track, what will this countries citizens and others do? If they pull out, big oil will lose. Is it time for another big false flag operation and martial law? Is it time for conscription to be put in place? Even with martial law, what will the public do? If 50 million people went to Washington, would it mean filling up the Halliburton camps?

Gosh, I bet Karl Rove is chewing his nails.

Well, here comes the draft! It's plain and simple! Parents of 17 to 21- year-old sons had BETTER get off there asses and do something drastic!!!

Bush might wind up starting TWO civil wars!

(sigh!) looks like it's time to order more ammo!

Well, if you take away their iPods, Play Stations and Hummers, maybe, just MAYBE, they might wake-up and say, "Huh? What the fuck? Where's my stuff"

But, sad to say, the sheeple won't do anything to jeapordise their own little, stupid make-believe worlds. Something drastic has to happen to shatter that world they're clinging so hard onto. It's pathetic, really.

Hell, there's a Creationist Museum being built somewhere in the South (of course) being funded with millions of dollars by wealthy donars - ALL to depict and display the alledged happenings in the bible to be litteral truth. Dinosaurs, fuck 'em. It didn't happen.

We're screwed, Man. NOTHING is going to get the sheeple of this country to act until something bites them in the ass. Litterlly.

Cyclone....another item that is getting a little play is the financial junket with the economic power players going to China... The economy is in a dire situation and while some seem to think this is a USA / China trade mission, to better encourage cooperative trade between the two countries, the real skinny is that if the Chinese make any inkling that they are no longer in favor of the greenback there will be a stampede. The US has sent its best to go forth with cup in hand for the mercy of the Chinese not to crash the economy pure and simple.

Countries around the globe are beginning their slow liquidation of US currency in favor of Yuan, Euro and Real...

Bush has asked for several billion more in emergency funds for the military this following a recent anouncement that the military is in fact broke....

The Saudis pulling their ambassador without any real indication as to why...

Olmert slpping and letting the world know the worst kept secret that they oooops do in fact have nuke capabilities and you SOB,s in Iran better watch out....

Something is afoot not sure what but expect something soon...

Murph,

There was only one question asked about this and Tony Snow answered, "I don't know." Then it was over. That is why you never heard anything about it.

Now suddenly, and even more conveniently, all the "generals" are begging for more troops. I'm sure that they did that without any orders from above. (yeah right) Boosh will say "I've always said that I would respond to the needs of the general's on the ground" and that will be that. More troops will be sent, the American people be damned again.

The only hope is for the Dems to begin hearings on Jan 1, officially uncovering enough to lead to impeachment. In the meantime, troop levels will rise and so will body bags.

I wouldn't limit it to 17-21 year olds, and I wouldn't limit it to males. I think it will eventually cover a lot more territory than that.

You must have a new blogsite. I checked on what you emailed me about earlier, and what I found was a last post from July. Let me know what the new site is, please. I sent you an email, but the kids have probably comandeered the computer!! I am fully aware of that situation, believe me. Spaz, Cal, let Dad answer me please. It will only take a minute!!

Ely,

They went, as you say, begging for their (our)lives. The only saving grace is that China doesn't have a sufficient banking system to handle things, YET. That is probably a bad thing, meaning we will be bled slowly rather than having our throats cut through the jugular. I think we both agree that the quicker the better, but I don't see it happening yet.

Chinese water torture is the current roadmap, and it now has more personal meaning. But, like you say, it's not just the Chinese, but EVERYONE. One tortuous dollar bill at a time, for a little longer I'm afraid.

Emergency funds? Yesterday Boosh said "we find ourselves in a war." Hello, YOU started the war a long time ago. Now it's a surprise that we are in one? How can it be emergency funding over and over 5 years into the thing? Utter madness.

I'll address the China/economic situation in a later post, I promise. We are approaching Code Red.

I have for some time now, been considering erecting two large posts in my front yard with a 4 ft. by 8 ft. sheet of 3/4 inch CDX plywood, painted white, cocked at a slight angle to the street so those coming up can read the large red letters that change , periodically, but always accost or infuriate, or hopefully, soothe; but I've always been held back, either out of fear of reprisal or inability to choose which cause I'm most incensed about.

Already my little house is known. "I live in Goldie Schnieder's place." "Ah, yes. I knew Goldie well, for years. You live there now, heh?"

Two years ago I decided to get into the Christmas spirit and put up lights, since all my neighbors were
glowing. So I ran 4" sheetrock screws into the siding in a four-foot diameter peace sysmbol 12 ft. off the ground and laced a long string of x-mas tree lights on the screw heads and plugged 'er in. Been on ever since. Though I do have to replace strings as they burn out, the message is pretty much constant.
(Opinionated people with unorthodox ideas can be SO tedious exercising their rights!)

So what can we do? Put up signs in our lawns and declare this new understanding that soon will dawn on millions of our already-skeptical neighbors that we have gone down this lonely road as far as we intend to go, and God damn George Bush and all his fucking bullshit!

This is, fucking, it!

It really gripes my hide that the Saudis can call in Chaney, even though he is a dickhead. After all, they are a despicable fascist monarchy and it was mostly their guys on the planes that ran into the Trade Towers. And, women are chattle over there. But, I don't understand how lowering the price of oil would be to their benefit. Why not raise the price or refuse to sell to us and sell to someone else instead, if they are mad at the U.S.?
As to sending in more troops, a draft would be a disaster, or bring things to a head at least. The iPod generation would jump to their feet. And, they'd be fighting with their cell phones and computers! Also, did you read Stephen Pizzo's site? The military is not only running out of guys, they have run out of money and equipment. Got gazillions of hummers and other stuff that is used up and banged up and no money to fix 'em. The money all went to Halliburton and the big military machinery suppliers. Mostly the Air Force and the Navy. Not the Army. One of the things that the contingent that went to China also is probably asking for is more money to fund the war. Considering that the greenback could easily tank anyway, that just makes us extra vulnerable as a nation. Without a functional army and with the dollar going south, that leaves us in a pretty vulnerable position to attack. Would anybody actually want to attack us? I don't know. But, if they were serious about wanting to protect this nation, they sure have gotten it all ass-backwards.
What a total clusterfuck we have to thank Boosh & Co. for.
I'm with you, Rockpicker. If they draft our sons, they've just drafted the wrong damn kids. Reminds me of the movie, "Tremmors." When that giant worm broke into the basement of those survivalists, and they went to the wall of weaponry and yelled. "You just broke into the wrong damn basement!!!"

Dave,

Hurrah! Glad to hear ya. I agree it is a war that won't be won conventionally. But then again, what civil revolution is? The problem as I see it is that in combination with technology, these power mad, dominating bastards will have an easier time going the population suppression route. We sure aren't going to change the structure of this government now by voting them out. The power is way too entrenched and has been for a long time now.

Have you got more info on Saudis debt? I wasn't aware that they were in debt?

Saving Americans and worthyness. Hmmm. It would seem to me that making a statement like that is a bit difficult. But if the revolution happens, which is concievable, I got a feeling that worthyness is not going to be an issue. I also think that any decisions like that would be a bit much to deal with. Although, it sure is a historical fact. I'm just concerned about who will figure they have that responsibility, and I figure there will be others than the present people in power who will step forward on it.

I agree that not assisting large government is the right idea. Unfortunately by buying the very items needed to live in this society today is an avenue of support.

All of the natural energy sources are going to go away, particularly if we start substituting one or another of them. Keep in mind that all of them that are easy to extract have been burned up. Natural gas will peak also, as will coal. Unless all of the information out there on these resources are bogus, the ONLY alternative is to power down and that is not going to happen voluntarily at a national level. At least a few European countries are making a stab at it. I simply cannot conceive of it happening here. This will have to play out and be forced on us with all the accompanying chaos and destruction and mayhem to go along with it. That is why I want to see small communities of like minded people forming up. Attitude changes along these lines are hard to come by these days.

I haven't read all of the comments (I have to get to work) but I wanted to add my 0.02.

Cyclone, I generally agree with your post, but I'm not sure about a couple of things. First, the oil issue. For the Saudi's to drop the price of oil to 1970s levels, they'd have to flood the market. And I don't think they can do it. For one thing, they're production (and that of all OPEC's members) has been going down down down for quite a while, and there are credible reports that Ghawar is crashing. (See the Oil Drum site for some good analysis of that) So, unless they have one hell of a reserve, they'd probably couldn't do that. Secondly, I think it would probably be political suicide -SA depends on that oil revenue to pacify their population. They have a LARGE number of young, unemployed young men with no real prospects for a future. If that money dries up, what do you think they're going to do, since they have nothing else?

I'm not sure it's time for a revolution yet. I think we'd simply fill the Halliburton camps. And I don't think most folks would wake up until you draft their kids -and the kids would have to have their IPODS removed first.

But it will probably happen. As Leslie Fish said one day it will be "up to the dusty attic, out with a trusty gun. The lawyer and the law book only go so far. Sooner or later push gonna come to shove..."

They will say where's my gun and are we ready for that? Please consider this my friend, it will be a one way street on our part, but if something happens to us it will be a war for sure, and my six sons and their friends plus the other family members and extended family would become involved to some extent also, so be clear my brother, thats all i ask because the price will be dear IF The blood starts to flow.

freeacre, dave and ras,

Trying to keep this short. Saudi's would and could drop the price of oil for a number of reasons.

1)While they were broke and in debt in the 90's, no longer the case. They pacified their people by doubling the per capita income from then until now. Approximate Saudi income: 80's, per capita $23,000; 90's pc $7,000; current pc $13,500 so the people think they are doing right by them.

2)The result would be the same as the 80's, American oil would be too expensive to drill and there would be a complete shutdown of American oil production.

3) The Royal's think they have enough good will with the people to survive over the short term because the people hate the US and would root against us, and the Royal's certainly don't need the "extra money" right now. Many young angry males would be sent to Iraq to blow away some Shiites, a wonderful sport.

4) It would not have to be cheap for long. US big oil would go apeshit knowing that their gig was up and they might start the revolution themselves. It is simply to remind Booshco of the potential consequences of such an action.

5) Raising the price or refusing to sell to us would not work, we would just pay more and buy it from a third party.

6) Freeacre, you hit the nail on the head. They don't give a rats ass about their people, as long as they can appease them enough to stay in power. Over the short term, which is all it would take, they think they can hold off the wolves.

Finally, they don't think it will happen. They are probably right. Boosh won't move the troops, he'll leave that mess for the next poor bastard that wins the election.

The Saudis cannot drop the price of oil. That is ridiculous. They may be able to pump things up a fraction, but the result will be minor for the major oil companies and dreadful for the Saudi Arabian fields, damaging them significantly. What I am sure they threatened was a spectacular decrease in production thus raising oil prices to such levels that the US economy would collapse like the house of cards it is.

You need to get around more. I suggest you start by reading up on peak oil. Start with Twilight in the Desert by Matthew Simmons, then read The Long Emergency by Kunstler.

Go to lifeaftertheoilcrash.net.
energybulletin.net

google peak oil and the Hirsch Report

Then revise your stance.

anonymous 4:40,

With all due respect, I beg to differ. And, I do get around quite a bit. The Saudi's CAN drop the price of oil. Why would you think they can't? They can do whatever they please in the short term. If it weren't possible, why would the Washington Post print an editorial by an Iraqi consultant stating the exact same thing? The Iraqi oil isn't flowing, which only adds to their ability to do just that. How do you think the American oil industry crashed in the 80's? It wasn't from OPEC raising the price, but from dropping it. Different times, same theory. And it would work now just like it did then.

They COULD raise it, you are correct about that, though that would leave no leverage with Booshco. In fact, it woud do just the opposite. Boosh would bring the troops home tomorrow if he thought oil would go to $85 a barrel. But the Saudi's aren't happy, so they are going the other way.

I would love to hear one coherent argument about why "they CAN'T drop the price of oil." I don't think I will hear one, but someone surprise me please. I have read what you mention, it does nothing to convince me otherwise.

This is not about PEAK OIL, which is where I think certain people sometimes get stuck into a single way of seeing the oil business. In fact it's contrary to the typical peak oil way of thinking. But, the near term is much different than the long term, and there is more than one way to leverage a moron and his thug.

Thanks for commenting,

Cyclone

Cyclone,
I have to agree with anonymous on this one. I don't think they have enough left on tap to drop the price -but I do think they could cut off production completely or at least enough to completely bring down the U.S. economy -and the government with it, as nothing, from the PC's in the Department of Agriculture to every aircraft carrier can operate without oil! If the price went up enough, it would not only crash our economy but also that of the EU -which the EU would not want, of course, which probably explains why Britain and some other european countries are having spasms of fear over energy supplies right now. (That and Russia's not so subtle embargo threat.)

how much the rich and powerful abuse the weak and poor
And just as sure nothing stops the world from turning 'round,
the victims in the end they rise up and throw their masters down.

(chorus)
Up to the dusty attic
Out with the trust gun.
The lawyers and the lawbooki only go so far.
Sooner or later, push is gonna come to shove.
Don't think that it can't happen where you are.
No high ground.
No high ground.
No high ground anymore.
No high ground.
No high ground anymore.

The masters know it's coming, they try to keep it back.
with buying off, or scaring off, or deflecting the attack.
They may succeed for centuries in holding high their ground,
but soon or late the people rise and the avalanche comes down.

No high ground,
No high ground
No high ground anymore

They veil their chains in pretty words of god and truth and right.
They ban the poor folks weapons and teach them not to fight.
They play divide and conquer, go hate the Jews or blacks,
Until the people rise and dump it off their backs.

(chorus)

The law can never make you free, for look who makes the laws.
The sharks they pull the smaller fish into their jaws,
and god will never make you free, for look who speaks for god.
The shepherd fleeces every lamb he guided with his rod.

No high ground,
no high ground,
no high ground anymore.
(repeat)

Ain't no freedom here, not unless you take it.
Ain't no justice here, unless you make it.
There ain't no safety anywhere, unless you keep your rifle there.
Time and change are everywhere and you can rise or fall.

No high ground,
no high ground,
no high ground anymore
(repeat)

The only hope that poor folk have is truth that can't be killed,
for victory goes not to the strong, but mainly to the skilled.
So always question what you're told and ask who does this serve,
and if that someone isn't you, give 'em what they deserve.
which is,

(chorus)

cut the price of oil?
I enjoyed your article, but wonder about this Saudi threat.

That would entail a huge effort on their part.

Wouldn't an easier solution for the Saudis to put pressure on the US be to switch from the dollar to euro for their oil transactions?

Greg Palast suggested that switching to the euro was one of the reasons Sadam was targeted for removal.

Oh, and just paranthetically, in my mind I have added "tafarian" to your name when I think of you. It is still gender non-specific, because I don't know if you are male or female. But I used to live in Jamaica, and always liked the rastafarians. So, in my head, you are ras-tafarian. Hope you don't mind.

For all of you who say Saudies can not drop the price of oil.

THINK WAL-MART , drop the price on fifty TV's for one day and every mom and top store in town goes broke trying to match the price. Wal-Mart does not increase the production of tv's or lose any money.

Nobody shuts down refineries waiting for the price of oil to go back up. They just loose money.

By DISTURBING.... well, thats obvious isn't it. I've only skimmed so far but will be reading thoroughly. This is EXACTLY as I've suspected. The signs are impossible to ignore.

And skimming down the page I hear more sounds of d'hammer and d'nail! Especially the one on economy down there. It is indeed disturbing when so, so many dots are popping up and even a cursury peek reveals their connections.

From Belgium,

My computer went to bed with a fever and increasingly frequent lock ups; even powering down on power up. But I wagged my finger at it sternly and said “Look here, any more of that lollygagging around and I am going to slap your hands and face” and now it has started behaving itself again. It’s a pity the same thing doesn’t work for GWB although I doubt if he has any mates left to do it for him, I should imagine he is feeling pretty vulnerable and lonely at the moment.

Anyway, the subject of this post was news to me too. Whichever way it pans out, one message is clear, the rulers of Saudi Arabia have more respect for their own people than the leaders of the USA have for theirs.

To make an early aside from the subject matter, the civil war in Iraq exists in fact but makes no sense at all to me. I really do not know what each side is hoping to achieve. As I understand it and I am willing to be corrected on this, the Muslim God is the same as the Christian and Jewish God. Different factions emphasised different things after the time of Abraham. Allah received a message from God which he wrote down and this became the Koran and it is this that is of predominant importance to the Shiite faction. After Allah’s death another book was written noting his favourite sayings and detailing the way he thought, conducted himself and led his life. The Sunnis also believe in the teachings of the Koran but try to conduct themselves in Allah’s image as outlined in this book. Is this such a great difference over which to fight civil wars? I have always maintained that differences between similar outlooks are greater than differences between opposites. It would appear that Shiites have fewer issues with say Hindu’s than with Sunnis.

Here are a few interesting facts which surprised me. 85% of worldwide Muslims are not Arabs, including approx 65.5 million in Iran.
Excluding the countries of Qatar; Oman; Yemen Turkey and Palestine for which I was not able to find reliable figures, the Middle East breaks down as 77.3 million Shiites and 125.8 million Sunnis. This is total population not people able to bear arms but the proportions are interesting because I always thought that Shiites were in the majority. Any future escalation of the civil war would probably involve the Saudi peninsular flooding Sunnis into Iraq with Iran and Hezbollah forming a pincer movement.

On the matter of the Saudis unofficially withdrawing their Ambassador from the USA, this is obviously a show of determination and a message that they would consider breaking off diplomatic relations if they do not get their own way. If this happened they would have to sell oil to America through a third country which would necessarily bump up the price which in turn would rebound on GWB.
Bush Senior is connected to Big Arms and as such has personal interests in maintaining the war effort but now has a conflict of interests with The House of Saud.

It was fairly open knowledge that after the Repugs won the mid term elections, Rummy and Cheney wanted to begin the draft and also send the National Guard to Iraq, in fact anyone who could hold a gun without falling over. This is still a possibility of course but they are not in the invincible position that they formerly imagined themselves. The other possibilities are just getting to hell out as fast as they can and taking the heat from all sides over the oil issue or trying to broker (buy) a short term peace with the war lords which will include the Sunnis and hold together at least until all Americans are all out of the country. Meanwhile the American people are not in a position to do anything at all, short of an insurrection. Do you really suppose they would go to their newly elected Democratic Congressmen and Senators and threaten to vote the Repugs back in if the boys are not immediately brought back home? Just as a flight of fancy, I wonder how Nancy Pelosi would run the war. It does seem though that all this ‘upset’ has put Iran on hold (or has it?).

Ely, I was under the mistaken impression that all oil deals were paid for in dollars but this is not so according to Cryptogon 10 Dec 06 who had this to say.

“Russia and the members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, the oil cartel, cut their dollar holdings from 67 per cent in the first quarter to 65 per cent in the second.

Meanwhile, they increased their holdings of euros from 20 to 22 per cent, the BIS said. The speed of the shift may help to explain the weakness of the dollar, which recently fell to a 20-month low against the euro and a 14-year low against sterling”.

And - “Such shifts may be modest compared with the total assets held, but they provide a crucial indication on future thinking.

Currency switches are likely to be progressive, subtle and discreet, as untoward attention could hit the dollar, lowering the value of depositors’ remaining dollar-denominated assets”.

This is probably what is behind GWB’s request for emergency funds but it does seem surprising since the Fed is obeying the Presidents request to run the presses 24/7.

Annon 4.40, this is not a lowering of price through economies of scale, eg how much would you charge me for 10; how much for 100; how much for 1000 etc. This is using the oil price as an economic weapon in a similar way that refiners drop prices at the pump to almost cost in order to drive a competitor out of business.

However Cyclone, you are going to have to run this one past me again since the above analogy seems not to apply here. I see the logic of what you are saying, sort of but since total world demand is exceeding total world supply then whatever the Saudis do is not going to affect any other oil producing country. They don’t have to follow suit, they can just ask their price and get it. This then leaves the Saudis selling their oil cheap and the refiners selling at their normal price and pocketing the difference. I feel I have missed a vital step somewhere.

Dave, I fully agree with you.

Ras, Love the song, I will have to look up the artist.

Finally, the Cold Fusion topic is raising its head again. I can’t decide if it is Emperors clothes of if it makes the whole oil subject irrelevant.

About dropping the price of oil... Would they? Could they?

Its a no-brainer! I agree with Cyclone's 9:35 and subsequent 7:44.

Just for fun I play no-limit texas hold em. Have you any idea how much havoc you can wreak on a table when you have 25 times the chips of anyone else on the table?

There is no doubt Saudi has the cash to sustain themselves and OPEC. What do we have? Trillions in debt! Used to be our cash remember? Which addresses the "could" question.

But why does that make it a no-brainer? If Saudi, in response, becomes pro-active... and it appears they are prepared and have the will... they will use the ONLY weapon they have. OIL!! There is no way they, or anyone else in the region, can challenge us militarily. Which addresses the "would" question.

In his 9:35 Cyclone challenged: "I would love to hear one coherent argument about why "they CAN'T drop the price of oil."

There really is no argument there. They can do whatever they choose to do be it wise or suicidal or not. The question really is, will they?

There could perhaps be a legitimate argument here that they would not. At least not yet.

Its genesis goes back to the buildup to Iraq and the war that ensued between State and the Pentagon which we all know the Pentagon won. Powell was left to mouthpiece for the victors... ahhh, the price of defeat!

The stories of what was really going on behind the sceenes in that war have gotten little ink thus very important details are unbeknownst to many or written off as conspiracy theory or of minor import.

What is pertinent to Cyclone's challenge now however is the detail that it was a neo-con agenda to hijack the Iraqi fields and infrastructure and auction it off to a select field of bidders that were in on the ultimate goal. That goal was to break the back of OPEC by flooding the market rendering Saudi impotent and subject to whim, aka CONTROL!

We only need study the nature of the PA and Bremer's 100 Orders to evidence the highjack intent. However the ultimate goal would never become manifest for at least two reasons:

First, Iraq's infrasturcture was toast and any production increases would/will take years even in a peaceful environment. This alone precluded the goal.

Second, State was backed by Big Oil (et al) interests with a whole lot more power and influence than their agent, the impotent Mr. Powell. I believe they acquiesed in the early years and patiently waited for "right time" (or a time of necessity) to intervene for a myriad of reasons not the least of which was to pacify the neo-cons and thus the Bush administration which had latched onto them to affect their own agendas. The cons had waited patiently too and now they were legitimatized by the administration. The only way to really get rid of them was to let them hang themselves with their own war.

Now, I know from one view, that sounds crazy. Afterall Bush is an
oil guy. Cheaney too. But Bush believes he has a mandate from God which adds a wild card in the game. In this crazy chess game for power and control the ones who have won before the battle begins are the ones playing both sides against the middle. But even so, it still has to play out and "adjustments" are made as the game unfolds.

Generally wild cards are just so much nuisence but in this case the messiah cum cowboy just happened to be the president too.

We know Big Oil's opposition to breaking the cons version of privatization, and subsequesntly OPEC, surfaced and put Bremer in his place. Why they would ever sit back and let any plan to do so without overpowering it is a no-bainer the cons had no concept of.

Now lets fast forward to today and examine why Saudi would not flood the market.

Consider these factors:

Baker's presence for 8 months in the region.

The "other" version of privatization woven into the pages of the ISG report.

Baker's power, influence, and position. Not only politically but as an agent for Big Oil which is in bed with producing nations in various ways. In the case of Saudi its a long story going back to the pre-westernization of that country and moving forward from there.

It is noteworthy that these ways are levereged in 3rd world nations in such a way so as for our cash to come back to use and then go back to them in the form of debt. Saudi started out this way too. But this is no longer the case. However, there is no doubt of the import and significance of their western alliances in the game of what is anything but free market enterprize when it comes to the back and forth flow of oil and petro cash.

Baker's "relationship" with the Saudi's. This is the guy who made AWACS possible for them. This is the guy counseling the defense ministry in the suit brought by the 911 families. This is the guy charged with Iraqi debt restructuring much of which is owed to the Arab oil producing nations.

The bottom line is there are enough valid factors present here to suspect something rotten in this Cheaney/Saudi story. And its not in Denmark!

Is it possible that Baker (and the behind the sceenes cabal he represents), even with all his power and influence, needs a little help? What better help could he get than to petition his Saudi friends to shake things up a bit and throw the cowboy a bull he don't really want to challenge... a threat that could be a VERY REAL POSSIBILITY?

Having said all that we cannot for one second underestimate the religous war factor that is inextricably woven into the reflections ever increasing on a daily basis. There is no doubt legitimate argument can be made that its all about power and control and oil is the frosting on the cake. But underneath that, and I refer back to Bush's claim that god CHOOSE him to be his prodigy, is a war fueled by long held religous ideaologies and belief systems on ALL sides. This latest Saudi threat, if legitimate, empahsises that fact.

We are in troubling times and history is coming home to roost!

Cyclone,

This is Matt from LATOC. Great piece except about the oil supply. It's possible they can still raise production but if you've been following the supply issues in the PO blogosphere it's really looking like the saudis are about to see their production go into decline.

but other than that great piece.

It's also possible they told Cheney they'd cut the supply, thereby jacking up the price. That would increase anger at Bush/Cheny and give power to the other "factions" in the american political discourse. Not that the other factions are any better.

Strangely enough, I think the other "faction" is Daddy Bush and Billy Boy at this point

Cyclone, one quick question if you don't mind. You stated in one of your earlier comments that the Saudis wouldn't want to wreck our economy. Well, my question is, why not? We're completely broke, we're a threat to most of the world, and though we owe them money they know as well as we do that it's never going to get paid back. Wreck the U.S. and you solve those problems in one fell swoop. Furthermore, they could then start selling all their oil in Euros or Yuan to the Europeans and the Chinese, who are vastly more stable and the latter of which has an almost limitless appetite for it.

I note with interest tonight's evening news report that the Iraqi government now wants to re-hire the "Bathists" that were in Sadam's army. Humm...I assume that these Bathists were mostly Sunnis? So, that would support the idea that the Saudis are insisting on more rights for the Sunnis, and somebody has jerked the right chain for them.
And, Belgium, I think you misspoke a little bit. Muhammad wrote the Koran after hearing from Allah, who is also Jehova, or God. And, '...after Muhammad's death" not, Allah's. But, we know what you meant. Anyway, it's mostly "Greek" to me. It's like the Catholics vs. the Protestants vs. the Greek Orthodox all at each other's throats and bombing the shit out of each other for what?? I can't believe that we are over there and we don't even know what in the hell we are dealing with. We can't tell a Kurd from a turd. Of course, it's because we don't really care about them. It's about Unical, the pipeline, the petro-dollars. What a farce.

This is a complicated issue, but in short, China is the most obvious choice to wreck our economy. But, many others could do so as well. The simplest answer is that before they do so they (whoever it is) must have a banking system in place to replace the one that currently runs the show. At this point, no one has that, certainly not China. But, eventually they will, then it's game over. Many more issues come into play, but that is the first and foremost reason, in my view, why we aren't eliminated today.

Actually, the Baathists are a "secular" group. Though lately they have began leaning toward Islam, in an effort to garner support.

Anyone with a functioning brain believes that the biggest mistake (besides going in to begin with) of this war was to entirely remove the Baathists from the equation. They have since joined the "blow somebody up" party, though I don't think any of the other groups believe that they can be trusted. They are kind of a gang of outlaws at this point, thanks to Boosh refusing to let them participate in the "new Democratic Iraq."

But, your point is not automatically invalidated simply because they aren't officially affiliated with a particular group. I'm sure they could be bought pretty easily, by the Saudi's or anyone else, as long as their job description included "killing infidels" and otherwise creating general havoc.

From Belgium,

Freeacre,

Thanks for sorting out my religious persona and pleased you were able to make sense of it.

On the point about the planes and the towers, several of the dead hijackers were interviewed on the BBC a few months ago looking remarkably well despite the adversity they suffered. Some people believe that the planes were drones flown by remote control. Others have come up with the unlikely scenario that they were holograms because close up still frame footage of the second strike does not show the plane entering the building and no external bits like wings or engines bounced back outside the tower. This leads to the further question of the last second correction of course and angle of strike and was the burning fuel outside the building a hologram also. It seems implausible to me.

It gives me no pleasure to be right on this one but Bush senior has told his wayward son to ignore the Saudis and get his arse out of Iraq immediately. The whippersnapper however would prefer to sacrifice the National Guard rather than loose his ugly face; unless his ugly face is sacrificed first.

I meant to comment on something that you said about understanding the "religious war" aspect of all of this. I think that is one thing that the west is, to date at least, incapable of embracing, and why we always turn out to be losers in these situations. Until we realize that these people are serious about being willing to die for reasons we cannot begin to understand, we will never be able to defeat or live peacefully with them. It is really something similar to racism on our part. We don't get it, so we just call it "terrorism," or "extremism," or "whateverism. Until we make a serious attempt to learn what they are thinking and why, we will never be at peace.

Thanks for bringing this into the mix,

Cy,

How do you involve the sheep in the streets in a revolt? That is simple; give them something to watch, and make them notice that the TV doesn't cover what they know to be true.

How many people do you think heve noticed the steady increase of prices in the grocery stores? How many people do you suppose have passed by the progressively empty mall and store parking lots? How many people have noticed their own budget a little short this holiday?

If you want to enrage the public, then skip FOX news, pass the Wal-mart commercial, and go to the one-two punch. Show the public that, while their bills go up and their budget goes down, the 2% are having a GREAT holiday this year. Skip the fact that "their" representatives in government are two faced liars, and appeal to the most basic of Americans' traits. Appeal to their jealousy.

You Soap Box isn't tall enough, and you bull-hon's too quiet. If you want to get the Sheeple's attention, then give them a series of two minute You-Tube videos complete with dialog and background music, with pretty pictures that piss them off more and more every time they think of the work executive.

Let me play director for a minute...

-Show a congress luncheon, then a soup kitchen in New York.
-Switch to a corporate holiday party for Mobil executives, then an under-bridge gathering for the hundreds of homeless in Vegas or LA.
-Show the White house christmas dinner, then the trailers outside New Orleans.
-Film a General Motors bonus check, then an unemployment and an FIA office in Detroit.

You don't tell Americans how they are living an unreal life under false pretenses! You don't tell the sheeple that they are living under a mushroom of lies! You don't tell people that the rose colored glasses are so covered in bullshit that the corn is growing from the frames!

If you want to motivate Americans, you don't tell them the truth. They already know that. You point the finger at someone to blame, and then tell them, where they live.

You want to see big oil scared? Show them a video of fifty thousand people outside the Walton family's Christmas reunion.

You want Cheney scared? Tell Cindy Sheehan where Haliburton's CEO is vacationing, and give her a room number.

REMEMBER MINGO!!!

Good to hear from you, it's been too long! I fear that what you propose might fall a bit short. Using your first example, their being shown the Congressional luncheon followed by the New York soup kitchen. Unless they happened to be in line at the soup kitchen, the reaction would likely be this. "Look at those poor people in line waiting for food. Aren't we blessed that we have items in the pantry? It's sad, someone should do something about this." Then back to the couch to watch American Idol they would go.

A sad commentary on the American people, but an accurate one I fear.

From Belgium,

It would appear that not all Americans are as dumbed down as they are given credit for. In fact a recent in depth political poll shows that the majority are politically street wise savvy. Sometimes people who are undecided on an issue will tend to agree with the assertion implied in the question so in this poll many of the questions were asked ‘the wrong way round’ and still the majority view was that macho policies don’t work and this present administration is dysfunctional. It seems that ‘We the People’ have amended their former choice and are now critically watching and waiting.

Here is a section from the conclusion:
“It appears from this poll that the failure of the neo-con/liberal hawk program of "muscular intervention" in both Iraq and the "War on Terror" has led to the situation where the American people have a more sophisticated and nuanced attitude toward national security and world affairs than the bipartisan Washington foreign policy elite. Continuing to subscribe to the conventional wisdom will only serve to increase this growing gap between public attitudes and the Washington consensus”.

What can the people do if their hopes are ignored and their wishes are hijacked? There may be many alternatives but here is one set of answers. The article is called “It is not just Bush, we are accountable too”

It has been said that television is for people who want to switch their brains off and computers are for people who want to switch their brains on. When it is important enough the people will make the right choice.

From Belgium,

Yes Ras, you should have told us about your blogsite before.

I also agree with Murph, force through an Envoronmental Impact Study. Ras, I really can't emphasise this enough:
1. Get them to pay for it (It is their responsibility).
2. Make sure YOUR SIDE gets to appoint the independant study group. Don't let them appoint their own experts otherwise the report won't be worth having.

From Belgium,

Talking about other bloggers who visit The Real Deal, what happened to Mrs P?
Are you still out there?

While we're waiting for Cy to get back with his promised post, I thought I'd update where we are as regards Real ID. According to the Montana ACLU fall 2006 newsletter, the Real ID bill authorizing the creation of a national identity card "was passed by the senate without debate as a rider to a supplemental appropriations bill in April, 2005 authorizing spending for tsunami relief and the War in Afghanistan." It allows our government to require all the states to meet federal rules, including biometric identifiers to be accessible nation-wide and stored in one centralized federal data base.

The Wall Street Journal said a new analysis from the National Governors Association, the National Conference of State Legislatures and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the law "is also going to be costly and burdensome."

Under Real ID, all 245 million existing holders of drivers licenses must apply-in person- for new, standardized id cards. The report says that state motor vehicle department staffs will need to be more than doubled, and workers will have to be trained to verify copies of original birth certificates, Social Security cards, and the like.

No mention of RFID, but what do you think they're talking about? This appears to be a golden opportunity. I expect the feds will take full use of it. BTW, this is scheduled to be implemented in 2007.

Ras

Went to your site. Where are you located? You may get a real education if you start fighting this development legally. There are a lot of hoops that developer has to jump through, depending on your state and local codes. I recently witnessed an entire community come together to stop an ugly American developer in his tracks. He's backed up and rethought his strategy, and he's still proceeding, but local resistance did slow him down. He was forced to pay fines for exceeding excavation permits, and he was also forced to reclaim the damaged ground.

Go to your local law school and ask for student help. All you need are a couple of interested kids who want to make a name for themselves, and , you're off!

Here's an alternative thought - as soon as Cheney got back, he got to work - or more probably pulled out an already-prepared contingency plan. He's an arrogant, vindictive, vile control freak who will not accept being told what to do by a bunch of camel-fuckers with gold tassels on their sheets (his thoughts, not mine). I suspect he's looking for a replacement for the Saudi royal family. Maybe there's a reason bin Laden is still at large. There are wheels within wheels within wheels here. Also not that there are something like 1800 princes in the family, and I bet more than a few are owned by Cheney or the people he fronts for. I would not be surprised to see turmoil and political violence in Sausi Arabia in the next 18 to 24 months, probably involving a coup originating from within the family itself.

Ras,

The EIS is good advice but your down to a last minute. You need some teeth in the short term. Just enough to queer the vote and declare a review period. I read your post and the words " species of raptors on the federal protection list " might be just all you need for now. This is exactly the little zinger that stoped the massive outer loop project in metro Atlanta. That and a massive citizen objection ironically enough from people living in those mcmansion subdivisions peppered across the landscape... you know, not in my backyard.

It would be good if you had documentation at the meeting. DNR might could help with that and be able to fax you something right away.

Even if it passes it may not be too late but you'll need the courts to get a cease and desist. And for that you have to have your ducks lined up. There is help out there. The wheel has already pretty much been invented so get plugged into the network. You just have alot of homework and leg work to do. Establish grassroots.

Plenty of like-minded non-profits around that can be useful... ie, forest action network, nature conservancy, wilderness society, sierra club and others. Google key words * environmental non-profit list * to get links and phone numbers. If any of these are in your area call em tomorrow, explain the situation and the time frame, and see if they can advise you hovw to get this tabled for review.

And one final idea.... I don't know if this has ever been done before to challenge a subdivision development but how 'bout an Economic Impact Study. If you can make em do it it will all be positive in the developers and the county's favor. What your then gonna do is challenge the numbers and the stuff they didn't include. I don't know what the density regs are but 410 acres could yield 1200 houses easy. Thats alot of rug rats so what about the school system? Whats it gonna cost the taxpayers for that new one? Thats alot of cars. What are those roads gonna cost?. Where's the trash going? Same for the rest of infrastructures. And so on.

You can drive them crazy but you need massive community support and/or the courts. If its the latter you need skilled people who can provide documentation with teeth in it.

In the end even if you stop the development you may not be able to stop the clear cut. Its private property and old growth timber is rare. But its likely not virgin timber. The only thing you may have going here is the lumber market is down. Way down. Probably 30% from where it was a year ago and 40% in two years. I don't know how that translates to raw timber but I wonder if your neighbor knows that little sad (for him) tale.

Good luck mama,

palooka

Thanks all. I thought you knew about my blog; in fact, I know MF does because he has left comments before, but then, maybe he was the only one who ever looked at my profile.

The comment line is only open during business hours, 8-5 CST. Thanks for all the ideas; I will use them all. I intend to give them hell in every sense of the word. I also intend to ask them how they intend to compensate me and my neighbors for the loss of our home values; not only will we lose a significant portion of our view, but with huge McMansions on the borders we're going to look like the poor country cousins. (huh, just let some McMansion type see my compost heap and let them freak out). Plus, some of us are on the slope and how are they going to take care of our change in runoff and erosion control? Etc etc etc. I'm going to hit them on every front possible. I'm starting a petition and intend to badger my neighbors first thing in the morning. I've sent alerts out to all the lists I'm on and am trying to contact a friend of mine who is a (very) well known civil rights lawyer in this area to see if she can help. And palooka, things for the tip: the top search results was the Sierra Club group dedicating to stopping this type of thing, and they have a phone number I am about to call. If worst comes to worst, they'll have to physically remove me from the property -I'm not afraid of going to jail for what I believe in.

I have to make a stand. I'll probably lose but that's not the point. I'm not afraid of failure, only of betraying what I believe in.

rockpicker: about those IDs; I've said it before and I'll probably say it again: the ultimate goal is to have us all tagged and chipped with Fox News constantly being blasted into our brains. Before it comes to that, I'll either do my best to bring the whole damn thing down (and I say that at the risk of ending up in Gitmo tomorrow) or move to a cabin in the woods in the middle of nowhere with just me, my dogs, and my rifle.

Great piece, Cyclone!
I was very amused by Cheney's obvious "my feet are like wings" sycopantic attitude towards the Saudi royal family. Incredible isn't it? What I'm looking forward to more than anything is next month's State of the Union speech. Wtaching him say "the state of the union is good" with a straight face is going to be a hoot!
Peace.

Cyclone, after much consideration and a lot of thought over the past several days since you posted this and before, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to bring it down. Everything. The longer it takes until the crash, the worse it will be. And the harder it will hit folks. I have some ideas on how to do that but I'll right those up later.

I got a response to my alert from a local environmentalist and posted it on my blog.

Tom,

I too am looking forward to the speech, especially the outlining of the "new way forward" in Iraq. The straight face is now crooked, no one believes it anymore. You are correct, whatever happens, it will be entertaining!

Thanks for the comments,

Cyclone

ras,

Myself, Ely, and many others are with you on this one. The quicker the better in my view. Let's get this over with and begin the rebuilding phase. The longer we hang on to this failed state, the tougher it will be to form anything resembling life as we know it.

So then, how do we get this over with? Any ideas?

BTW, were you the author of the op-ed on Yahoo today that said pretty much the same things as this post?

I tied up the municipal Planning Department most of the morning. They aren't happy with me. They'll be even less happy with me tonight.

My new t-shirt, which I'll make this weekend, will read: I Am Not Afraid and I will Not Apologize

ras,

We cannot end it without a bloody revolt. It is no longer in our hands. (it really never was)

I was not the author, unless someone stole it from me. Please tell me where to find it so I can read it.

Thanks,

Cyclone

Re: The South's creationist museum, are you aware there is a sign at the Grand Canyon saying it was caused by Noah's Flood???????????!!!!!
This is on public land, my land and your land. Which is as unconstitutional as Bush's occupation of the White House, I won't call him president because he isn't, he is a cheap two bit dictator playing statesman, and he can't even spell the word.
