CATCHING UP from Murph

Several posts back, I wrote a piece about the battles we are fighting in this community with the county commission over ground water quality and septic systems. This is an update for community action people that have issues with the bigshots trying to ram policies down people’s throats.

I left off in that post with the second of the 3 public meetings with the commissioners. We packed the house again for the third meeting. The people that did not have a chance to make presentations at the last meeting got their chance this time around. It was very much the same. Retired professional people in all kinds of related disciplines to the issue put up data and research showing that the commission and its staff were wrong. We also had a lot more of non professional citizens get up and present also, all of them thoughtful and articulate. Three hours of this. The commissioner that had insisted that we could never get the community together on this was dumfounded and snuck out after the meeting, not talking to anyone. The commissioners even had a police escort home after the first meeting because they were afraid of someone getting violent. Three meetings and not one word of encouragement or agreement with the county. Score one for our side.

During these three weeks of meetings we had representatives from our community action committee attend every single other meeting the commissioners held and all the other agency meetings pertaining to this issue. At one of them, they approached some of our people attending and asked if they had come to beat up on the commission again. They were told that they hadn’t seen anything yet.

In the 1 1/2 months since the last public meeting, we have learned a whole lot of additional information that indicates they have even more plans for our area that is not to our liking at all. So, our community action committee has reorganized. We are now a county action committee to cover more issues than septic and ground water issues, and are covering the whole county. Our emphasis and focus is currently on the septic/ground water issue until it is resolved, but there is so much more to deal with also. Two of the commissioners are up for reelection next year. They are showing a great deal of nervousness. They have been informed that recall may be on our next agenda.

We have gotten registered with the IRS so we can collect donations legally. We have officers and the whole kit and caboodle needed for this kind of action. We have put on retainer an attorney that will take on legal issues for us. We are appealing to other legal professionals to work pro bono. Believe me, there is all kinds of irregularities we have dug up that this group has been indulging in. They did not count on such heavy opposition and they have now got a big can of worms to deal with. It promises to get a bit messy at this point.

We had a Saturday meeting with the Republican Representative to the State. He expressed that he really didn’t want the state to get involved in this issue since they had enough problems to deal with. We informed him that if this commission didn’t back off, the state would get involved. We informed him that he better put out the word that we were dead serious and going to fight this all the way. We found out that he promptly had a meeting with the commissioners and the DEQ (which had done the original data collection on wells) and so far, the commissioners have delayed voting on this ground water issue. They originally were supposed to vote the end of March, it was put off to the end of April and now it is on indefinite hold, presumably until they finish getting the rest of the study data in and to regroup. Meanwhile, the county action committee is gaining members, getting some money in and we had a county wide meeting on the 15th of this month sponsored by the citizens’ action committee to decide how we want to proceed. We had about 300 people in attendance.

Now here is a kicker for you to consider. All of the people that started this whole citizen’s action are women. They are the ones putting in 15 hour days and attending every single meeting that affects us at the county level. Since the very beginning, this group has held the high ground and they are adamant that we continue to do so. They have made no mistakes, they ask for advice and information, and these women have my full and unqualified support, plus, they are really nice people. The rest of the men in the organization feel the same way. These women have been elected by unanimous decision to the offices of the group. They have formed a relationship with the state DEQ personnel and it appears that they are on our side. As we gain strength and support of more elements of the county, we are to be a force to be reckoned with. Our aim is to enforce transparency and honesty in the politics of the county. No more of this ‘good old boy’ crap and special interest power bases.

In the meantime, one of our members and researchers has turned up that this whole thing was started in Washington. It appears that a lobby group for the big corporations dealing with septic systems wanted a national standard for individual systems; there are millions at stake here. Congress approved a national study on this issue, wherein our area was one of three. This area was picked because the ground water is of such high quality and, incidentally, was also the poorest of the three locations. Of the total of $10 million allocated for the study, $5 million was for this area. Where we were under the impression that the beginning of this was local politics, but, we find out that the local politicos were only taking advantage of the situation. It appears now, that the whole agenda, locally, revolved around tax revenues. If they could get this part of the county to develop into vacation destinations for the wealthy, the tax revenues for the county would increase dramatically. It appears that driving out the lower income and retired people with this septic issue was one way to accomplish this.

Meanwhile, yours truly and many others are researching alternatives to the local rule proposals that the county tried to ram down our throats (alternative methods of removing contaminants, they do exist), other sources for nitrate appearing in the ground water, the community affects of this proposal (there is a moral issue at this time), the lack of political transparency, lack of public notification on the issue in the past and getting together a group of qualified people to review every single part of the data and science that prompted the county proposal.

So far the community has truly rallied around this issue. It is one of the most interesting community actions I and Freeacre have ever witnessed and we have been involved in these kinds of actions for a great deal of our lives.

I am writing this post about how this action committee is doing because, I want to emphasize that if there is sufficient interest at a local level, you can do something about bureaucrats running roughshod over the citizenry. I say, give the women a chance (except for Hillary) at a local level and you might get a real pleasant shock.

From Belgium,

Murph,

I have every respect for you and your group; again it demonstrates the power of numbers. If you have so many of the community presenting a solid wall to the commissioners with absolutely no descent, a clever question for them might be to ask that since they are the representatives in a representative democracy, just whose interests is it that they are representing because it sure a’int the citizenry. If your following was big enough you could always accuse them of being unchristian or even ungodly with the hope of attracting the religious right to your cause and then you would be a force to be reckoned with. Study Karl Rove, he may have something in his bag of tricks that could be useful to you. After all, the only thing that you want is your own way. Power to the people! As Woolfie Smith might declare.

Thanks for the update Murph, it's good to hear the ordinary guy winning for a change (not that you two are ordinary, but you know what I mean). The involvement of big business comes as no suprise to me. Good luck with your community action.

On a slightly related note, the planning laws in the UK are being overhauled, ostensibly to allow people to make home improvements without having to go through a lot of red tape. The real reason for the changes is that new road schemes, airport runways, supermarkets and nuclear powerstations can be built without consulting or considering those who will be most affected.
Best regards

Aaron

From Belgium,

Aaron, this is a new one on me, a lot of the UK news is filtered out over here. You may not know the answer to this one but will such things have to be declared on a conveyancing search?

Btw, I meant Wolfie Smith above.

Belgium, this is news out today so I don't know about the conveyancing search. Go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_
politics/6675137.stm for a better description. I remember Wolfie Smith, interestingly the same actor (Robert Lindsey) portrayed Tony Blair recently in a drama where he was tried in the European court for war crimes. One can but hope.

Aaron

Belgium,

LOL. Remember the high road? The day people start doing a Karl Rove trip is when I spend more time on my own projects.

Aaron,

I would bet a nickle of two that is is also to facilitate less community involvement and more secrecy.

Murph,

I guess I didn't get that one past you, huh; although it is always useful to know how the enemy thinks.

Follow the money and find the cabal.

Best hopes for a successful outcome.

From Belgium,

Here are a couple of conspiracy items in the recent news. The first is for those black helicopter guys amongst you.

http://www.thetruthseeker.co.uk/article.asp?ID=6600

The second is a bit of Dickchenery, read the item and also comment 3.

http://xymphora.blogspot.com/2007/05/dicksplanation.html

Personally, with 3000 dead in the twin towers and 3000 dead in the war I think he is too hard assed to give a fuck. But if something is darkening the poor man’s heart it could be the threat of being hung out to dry by the Israelis (particularly) or even the Saudis (possibly). If there is anything in it, could the first item have anything to do with a bit of pre-retaliation or am I just reading the white space between the lines. Either way, don’t have any truck with helpful pastors.

Belgium,

I think I talked about the foreign troops stationed in various locations around the US on a couple of previous posts. There are quite a number of sites that have documented this. Thanks for the link.

The link to xymphora is interesting. I was not familiar with that site. Anyone that has dug up information on Cheney know that he is capable of about anything. One thing we can sy about him with certainty is his allegience to the empire. If indeed the Israelis have something on him, I guess turn around is fair play?

Well done Murph!!!! You too Freacre!!!! You go girl!!!

Show them pesky big-money-nose-up-the-ass-of-the-fat-cat-land-developers-types which side if the street the votes are on!!!!!

HELL YEA!!! Get a rail ready to side 'em outa town on!!!

They tried some shit like that in Saluda about ten years ago. They decided to start zoning whatever land they decided they could turn into sub-divisons as "Comercial" and make the taxes so high that the owners couldn't afford to keep it! Didn't work worth a shit!

The whole town got up in arms about it!! An armed mob outside of the county commisioners' meeting place has a highly negative bearing on the adoption of high-handed inactments!!! Needless to say all further discussions concerning their zoning stunts ceased!

Keep their feet to the fire, and let 'em know that this sort of shit WILL NOT be tollerated!

Oh Yea! Just a reminder! The introduction of boiling tar and feathers to the environment IS considered "eco-friendly" if applied to a fat-cat real-estate developer!

thanks for the encouragement. there are so ramifications to this deal that I expect the county to not give up if there is enough money involved, in which case it is gonna get real ugly. A bunch of old timers from around here are talking about lynch mob and worse if they follow through. I've been through that kind of stuff before. People get hurt and of course that is to be avoided if possible. They have more applicable force than we do and are better organized and have the blessings of the power structure. A war of attrition is an ugly thing.

The ritzy yuppy playground community to the north of us has been giving us shit over this issue. Someone on Sat. or Sun put up a whole bunch of signs around the community stating that the water was unsafe to drink or bath in and had to be boiled, all under the name of the county commissioners. Everyone was in a real snit over that and the county commissioners published a hasty denial over the tv and the paper. Sure would like to shake the hand of the person who thought that one up. lol. Give em a taste of their own medicine.

Murph, as you know the little village that i reside in is feeling the beginnings of a turnover of the entrenched good old boys and girls, there are several issues at stake and they all have to do with the quality of life of the people that live here on a tiny plot of land sold to the whites way back when, and of course it has at its roots GREED, what the fuck is it that certain people just have to get there snouts deep into the trough as if they were starving ?
A new race track for quads ( those little four wheeled racers which are two cycled) has been constructed on the edge of town
without hardly any thought to what that means to the mostly elderly and retired people that live here.
The instigators assured those that did question the tracks impact that the noise and pollution from all those two cycles would be unnoticed!!!
i talked with one of the zombies that hashed this shit together and she informed me quite indignantly that what would i rather have, the kids running wild in the streets or a place where they could go and have fun!! We have three streets!!!
i have no quarrel with the track, just where they put it.This village will be overloaded with people out to have a good time and god help us when the RVs and the racing people converge here starting next weekend, i mean there are a lot of old folks here on oxygen,,,also the village has (one) grocery story,(one)auto parts store,(one)hardware store,(one)gas station, (one)rickety old hotel,..guess which bunch rammed this thing through, not the guy that sold the useless property that wouldn't grow weeds right on the edge of the village, three blocks from the center of town.
A nightmare for sure in the making.
Everyone that i have talked to is either completely unaware of the ramifications or has a vested interest in the money making aspect of this project.
This is just one of the things that are going on here, the value of property is going up somehow and i suspect that the old folks on fixed incomes will be pushed from their homes by the increased taxes to make way for developers to build McMansions , this place is a paradise you know, what with the hot water mineral springs, of which people from all over the world come to heal there broken bodies and minds, but they also bring their incurable diseases too. So theres no lack of immunity encounters to the people that reside here. And it shows with all the mysterious ailments that crop up from time to time.
This only one example and the latest that is taking place in my little corner of the world.
So at the request of and if you can imagine (i know its laughable)of a few people of whom are personal friends that i run for mayor in two years when the present mayor is up for reelection,
am thinking it over, don't know squat about such things but have two years to learn.
i see no need to turn this little sweetheart of an oasis into an infested place of party goers and all that goes on with crowds of people whom are out for a good ole time at the expense of the folks that live here.

Thank you Murph and Freeacre for standing up to the mother fuckers that just can't get enough of hosing down the people and our Earth Mother.

Sorry for the length of this comment but hell thats never stopped me before. If i wasn't up to my ass in alligators i would love to come to Oregon and help with the extermination.

Great Spirit we give thanks for the energy that these two beautiful people have been blessed with to confront the evil ones.

From Belgium,

Murph,
Never believe a rumour until it has been officially denied,
(Denying, gives it credibility as if there really is a case to answer and puts the denier on the back foot).

Mf,
If Clint Eastwood can do it then I don’t see why you can’t.

Murph, again,

As much I give my moral support to your fight with the commissioners it really is the tip of the iceberg if this horror story is true. Dianne D’Arrigo could be the new Karen Silkwood.

Belgium,

That article about radioactive waste does give one pause for reflection. Over the years I have run in multiple articles that talk about this kind of slipshod management of hazardous materials. Instead, what the government does is take relativly low risk and mortality civilian incidents and pass laws on that. Remember the peeling lead paint problem for infants? Very low risk, very few affected actually, and so now you got to use water based paints that are way more expensive and much more work to use and don't last as long. Meanwhile the government is polluting all over the place in a variety of ways. On top of that, allowing civilian contamination of food supplies also in a variety of ways. It appears to me that the amount of contamination of the environment is directly related to the amount of bucks that are funneled to senator or congressman Dinklebutt.

At 10:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I listened to Dinkelbutt in the debates last time, and I never heard him say anything of substance, so I didn't vote for him. In fact, I still have anti-Dinklebutt stickers on my old gas-guzzler work truck. They're kinda hard to read now, but they're there.

Sounds like you two have found yourselves on an interesting path. Good luck, my friends. This summer is the fifth day. Our level of consciousness is the galactic. Ethics guides our present level. Those who would lead need to cross their "tees" and dot their "eyes" with scrupulous precision. Corruption washes out it's future, like torrential rain.
