The End Times?

Over the weekend, I noticed that things haven’t gotten much better. In Iraq, somewhere around 100 people were killed in what Boosh terms as a “conflict that is going unexpectedly well.” The word on the ground is that "the worst is over." Sandra Day O’Connor gave a speech in which she warned on three separate occasions that we, the United States of America, are the closest we have ever been to living under a dictatorship. Unfortunately, unless you paid attention over the weekend, it is already off the radar screen. It happened on Friday night, and the Republican Tennessee “straw poll,” which is absolutely non-sensical and meaningless, has taken its place in the “news.” O’Connor, of course, took no responsibility in this, not touching on the fact that she voted to appoint George W. Boosh to the Presidency. Gas prices have risen 10-15 cents although crude oil prices have dropped. I assume that this is just in case the upcoming hurricane season creates damage that we can’t see yet. They probably didn’t quite make enough profit last year to cover what “might happen” this year. And many more of the same old things that happen every day with this insane bunch of thugs that run this place.

But, that is not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about something more personal, something that I want to remain in denial about but cannot any longer. That is this. The Real Deal has run its course, served its purpose, done its duty, however you want to put it. I feel bad about that. This blog has grown into something that I never imagined possible, thanks to all of you. But, for me, it has become a grind, a responsibility that I am struggling mightily with to uphold my end of the bargain. I’ve said about all I can say about Booshco and the direction our country is headed. Boosh is a dumbass that has sold us all down the river. That the vast majority of us agree on. The economy is going to blow like Mt. St. Helens on her finest day, another thing that many of us agree on. We agree on so many things. Plamegate started it all (and I thought would end it as well) and continues; Iraq sucks; Iran is a real problem; China is lurking along with the rest of the Mid East; Israel is, well, Israel; living from paycheck to paycheck is becoming damn near impossible for a lot of us; the middle class is near extinction if not already there; big business decides elections and owns the world; the Democrats and Republicans are like twins separated at birth; essentially the paper tiger, the USA, is history as a viable entity in the very near future and to call her a superpower is beyond comedic. We agree on most of those things, and that’s part of the problem. We agree too much.

I am preaching to the choir, and the choir needs to move ahead. If you believe anything that I write, it is time for you to prepare for the future. And, preparing for the oblivion that we are about to face cannot happen if all we do is rehash the idiocy that comes from Washington these days. If you don’t believe anything that I write and stay around for pure entertainment, you can go merrily on your way and find another place to be entertained. But don’t say you weren’t warned of what is to come. So, I think it’s time to pull the plug. This can happen one of several ways, and I would like some feedback on how best to accomplish this.

Let me say one more thing before presenting options. We have accomplished something here that I believe is unprecedented in the blogosphere. We have created somewhat of a family, and should be proud of that. And, somehow, we should continue that to the best of our abilities. Families evolve over time, and the time for our evolution has arrived. I wish that I were able to change the concept of the Real Deal into a place where I could present concrete ideas about how to proceed from here. But, I can’t. I can’t because I don’t know enough. I am as lost as the next person as to what to do next, although I know deep in my soul that the time is near to get out of the big city and join a small, like-thinking community that is preparing to care for one another when the economy crashes, or WWIII or the second Civil War become a reality. I do not have the expertise or the knowledge to lead anyone into the future, let alone a group such as ours that is scattered all over the world. So, let’s look at options.

1) I could keep this site going and post something when I feel it’s necessary, or when I need to blow off some steam. That would probably be once a week or so, if I had to guess.

2) I could keep it going and allow for comments only. Make it a place where we all can come and chat as we want to, sharing ideas and outrage at what is happening.

3) I could shut it down entirely, and we could continue to communicate through email, or not at all.

4) I could open it up so that those of you who wish to could do what Murph has done a couple of times, write something that could be posted whenever the mood strikes. I will post on occasion, but it would be more reader driven than Cyclone driven. Ideas for the future would probably be best, but, like I said before, I don’t have many of those ideas. Other than saying, it’s time to get ready. This is all going down, and going down pretty soon.

5) I could go on a hiatus for a while, do some research and build some energy. Then see where we are, see whether or not the internet, electricity and money still exist, and then re-start. Picking up wherever Booshco or whoever has left us to rot. We will lose folks, that is a given, but we have proven that grand things can be built from nothing into something pretty darned impressive in a short period of time.

I have my own idea about what is best, but I want to hear from you, those that have made this all worth it. There are a lot of you out there, from over 40 countries, and I will do what the consensus calls for. We will make this a pure democracy, no electoral college welcome. Maybe there is another idea out there that I have not thought of, some Holy Grail if you will. Thanks for making this something that I can be proud of. Something that I will in some ways greatly miss, in other ways feel relieved that the pressure of daily musings is off of my shoulders. Rest assured that it is something that I have given my all to. You are a great group of people. Maybe we can all get together sometime, somewhere. I’m willing, if you are.

So, either comment here or email me directly. We’ll decide how to proceed. For now, other than emails and comments, I'm out of here for a while until we decide what is best for the future of all of us. Thank you for hanging with me.

Cyclone

Cyclone,

I have been expecting for a while that something on this site would change. I have a lot of empathy for what you are going through and the conclusion you have come up with concerning this blog. I have noticed that there are a couple of other sites hosted by thoughtful people that write very well, and they have expressed much the same sentiment and are ready to close down.

This site, like many others, has been a place to keep up with some of the stuff going on in our government and world wide. I have acquired many new sites from people posting comments here that have broadened my reading considerably. It appears that the web is one of the last places free to everyone, at this time, where information and ideas can be exchanged and most importantly perhaps, information that is far more an accurate reflection of the actualities of the world. This is a good thing I think. I just hope it lasts.

Whatever you decide to do concerning this site is ok with me. I will be somewhat disappointed if you decide to end it of course. And, losing the sense of the community with the scattered readers will be a disappointment also. So, for those that wish to, I am posting my email address so if Cyclone decides to end it, we can continue discussions on the side. Sunrise3@coinet.com. Or, for that matter, anytime.

I hope that the consensus is to keep the site going under some condition that is ok with Cyclone. If I understand correctly, that will have to be with more contributions by the readers, or far less posts by Cyclone, or some combination. How about it folks? Where do we go from here?

Hell, slow it down, don't close it down. Take a break, kick back and empty your mind once in a while! Why post once a week? Why not once a month, or twice a month? You own the blog! The blog doesn't own you! If I had to come up with a post every day for mine, they would drag me off in a strait jacket, gnawing on my keyboard! Take a break and let the batteries recharge! We won't get pissed at ya!

I would like to see the blog kept going. I would even try to work up a post on occasion, if needed.
What is the minimum number of postings in a month (or week or whatever) required by Blogspot?
I am in a similar situation to uncuga, only farther north.

Cyclone, I have to say this is a surprise but not a shock.

I have had experience of people close to me who have tried to bounce back too quickly after fairly major surgery. Welfare payments killed the old idea of proper convalescence and pressures whether self imposed or from outside sources are often counterproductive. Combined with this there is the feeling of relief at having come to a decision together with a feeling of loss at letting go of something which is part of you and maybe some smidgens of guilt at letting people down. Perhaps there is a feeling that it has all been said and it is just a case of waiting for the inevitable chain of events to play themselves out. It is possible that you feel a responsibility within yourself to give best advice to those who want to listen but have no desire for the role of leader.

As far as the ‘group’ goes, there will be a feeling of what next; a feeling that they were part of something which no longer exists and trying to find a new direction.

All I can say is that your first responsibility is to yourself and those close to you. I am not going to suggest that you to give it up and I am not going to suggest that you keep it going. It is probable that if you keep it going with the intention of lower input how easy it is to get sucked back in because you cannot let one stupid comment go by and there you are back again. You are right that there are not many contentious issues amongst the contributors. It is always possible to play devils advocate of course but mostly these issues are too serious for that.

Being from one of the forty other countries I am conscious that the major concern lies within your own borders. That is where the first wave of asymmetric response is likely to occur if it all goes pear shaped but nobody is immune and now France is putting Europe in the centre of this very complex international issue. This together with your home grown financial issue makes for very uncertain times.

As a result of the blogosphere and responsible reporting, mainly coming out of Asia and to an extent the World Service, the world is slowly waking up to what is actually going on but the mad men are in control and the fear is that it is now too late, we can only hope not.

Take care and I am sure all the contributors will respect your decision whatever it is.

Best wishes from Belgium.

Uncuga and Amber,

One of the things that people fail to take into account is that there is no absolutes when talking about the future. We could get some real surprises. I've mentioned before, mankind does not have a good track record predicting the future. What we see happening (which is always in the past) has no absolute bearing on the future. t could very well happen as we all predict, (in some form or another)but I'm betting that we get some scenereo that is off by some amount. That's the problem with doom and gloom predictions. They are more often wrong than right. No matter what, a universal imperative is that there will always be change. Something in our past brought out a resistance and fear of change. Lots of effort has been put into this resistance. Politically it is called reactionism. The people that try and be reactionaries are always going to be frustrated for we can never stay the same or go back to what was. We can only strive for a change that we feel comfortable with.

Me, I will strive for a style of living that is best described by the word Anarchy. If enough people strive for that also, then we will have a social organization that is compatible with it. Consequently I am more interested in what we can become, rather than what we have left behind.

Amber,

As far as I know, there is no minimum amount of blogs necessary to keep a spot functioning. With the verbal activity going on at this one, I doubt that would be a problem anyway. But I am sure Cyclone would have a comment about this.

The question Cyclone put forward is what will this site become? As it is, he feels no compulsion to continue as it has been. It is soul, body and spirit depreciation to stay in a state of rage, dispair and frustration. It not only burns you out but contributes very little to the realizations and changes within ourselves necessary to keep going. Not to say that we shouldn't keep up on what is happening around us, but it is not a good state to dwell upon it constantly. Both my wife and myself have to be aware of this potential and sidestep it.

Good to hear from both of you. Don't recall you commenting before.

Belgium,

Wow man, I like the way you think.

You made the remark about leaders. One of my contentions is the question, 'What is the imperative for a leader?'
Does there alwyas have to be someone in charge, an authorive figure? I'm banking that it is not an imperative.

What ya think?

Hey Murph,

Are you still on for the bonfire on the 20th? It is the double whammy of the third anniversary of the Iraq war and the proposed opening date of the Iranian Burse. A chain of fires between you and uncuga would be really something. I just wish I could help you gather wood.

I think the imperative of a leader is to have the authority by virtue of respect, to arbitrate disputes by common consent but not to make decisions on behalf of the group. It doesn’t matter whether you call the leader an Indian Chief or an African Witch Doctor. This system, I think, will only work for small groups where the ‘leader’ or better called the representative knows all the people within the group. Can you imagine anyone in New York not having anyone to complain to when the refuse collectors don’t turn up or the water goes off?

Belgium,

You reply about a leader has a point. And, perhaps it is a good reason to doubt the sanity of living in very large groups. A study done back in the 70's that I got ahold of was very interesting on this subject. They found that with most animals, including humans, any group larger than about 40 had an exponential rise in conflicts. I am not sure of the breakover point necessairly being 40 or so, but cities are for sure an example of the conflicts. Again, if we have a large population die off, we will get to try it out I think.

I'd sure like you to continue with this blog if you could. Since I'm part of the working poor, I don't have a whole lot of time to do any research to get the information you've provided and many others on this site have provided links to other bits of information that too would slip by due to my need to constantly work.

So, if you stop, well, thanks for providing me with info I couldn't normally find. If you continue this blob, well, that'd be cool.

Hey, Uncuga,Belgium,Rockpicker, Stoney,Amber,Montana Freeman, et al,let's just pick up the slack for Cyclone for awhile, while he re-charges. This site is too good to lose...what I mean is that YOU are all too good to lose. It is like we have created a sacred circle in cyberspace and when we post we have the talking stick and say what is in our hearts. And the rest listen and then express themselves. It is comforting and empowering and I have come to depend on the process.
For those interested in growing things, I have sent away for seeds from a place called "Seeds Trust." These are all heritage seeds, from all over the world, real hardy and old fashioned ones that reproduce. Tomatoes from Siberia, etc.that should grow in our high altitude and cold weather.
Murph and I have a four foot deep fire pit in the backyard lined with rock. We've also got some felled trees that we cut down last year to make room for the greenhouse. Plan to light the whole thing on fire, Belgium, on the 20th. Maybe drink some snapps from a bottle wrapped in a paper bag while we are doing so, and toast you all.

I find it's very touching to realize I know who's anonymous comment I'm reading by the wording of the comment. When I start reading "From Belgium" I know it's him by the way he talks. The same is true of Sean and Montana Freeman.

Some time ago Cyclone suggested we comment on what was happening in our neck of the woods. In his post, Cyclone mentioned gas had gone up by .10 to .15 per gallon. Here in Southern Alberta, Canada our gas went up by .09 per LITRE last Wednesday. We are paying .89 per litre. FYI: a litre is slightly smaller than a quart. Today .89 converts to .76 US x 4 = $3.04 per gallon USF.

I have become fond of this blog along with all of the people who have commented thus far. I'm sure I check here a minimum of 3 times a day to make sure I haven't missed anything.

When I read Uncuga's comment I found myself nodding throughout her post. I could have written it, it hits that close to home.

Cyclone, you are about the same age as my husband and your daughter is the same age as mine. I feel an affinity with you because of that. I also know that my husband would not bounce back very quickly if he'd had the stuffin' knocked out of him either.

I hope this blog can be kept going in some form, I will certainly miss it if it goes. That said, you take care of yourself first Cyclone, one day at a time.

Ok, you want to know how to make gunpowder. Take 3 parts Potassium Nitrate and one part vitamin C powder. Grind them in a morter real fine. Makes a cheap and usable black powder substitute. If you want to speed up the burnrate, mix 3 parts Potassium Nitrate, 1part Vitamin C and 1 part finely ground wood charcoal.

There, feel better?

I have been reading this blog since its inception. I have never commented. I must do so now. When one looks at the blogs available for viewing and responses, none that I have come across have the unabashed honesty, belief, soul if you must, that this one does. I do not know how you do this each and every day. I know that you missed a few days plus weekends along the way, but for the most part each and every day we have had the fortune to read something from the heart, and from a different perspective than one can find anywhere else. I do not agree with everything that I have read, but agree with most. That is not a bad thing, but what gives this forum its lifeblood and friendly atmosphere. There are no shouting matches, insults and so forth. You will not find that anywhere else. Something special has been amassed here. I am not sure that there is a word to describe it, it is more of a feeling. A feeling like being in a warm cabin on a cold day. Should you decide to put the brakes on this venture, you may be assured that you will be missed, as will the community that has appeared from all over the globe. As one who left the United States to land in Britain, I find that this is the first place I visit each day. It starts my day on the right foot. From Libby to the Ports, I have read every word. And come back and back just to read the comments, hoping that something new will appear. Yes, you may be preaching to the choir, but the choir loves it and wants it and needs to hear it again and again. Did you consider that perhaps those in the choir are passing the words that you create to others who may not have access to this site? Some who maybe do not even own a computer? I know that I spread the word. I'll bet others do the same. Cyclones Real Deal did not become so large by accident but because the truth is told. Cyclone, please don't stop this, it would leave a hole in my heart the size of a crater. Cut back if you must, but keep speaking the truth. It is rare commodity, in any country these days. I will begin commenting if it will help.

Cyclone, first of all thanks for what you've created here, I visit this site more or less every day and feel that I am gaining a better understanding of how the world really works. When you state that "it has become a grind, a responsibility that I am struggling mightily with to uphold my end of the bargain." then I agree that it's time for a change. What I see now is real passion in your words, I would hate for you to become bored with your blog and dispirited by what you report.

None of us knows for sure what the future holds, all we can do is make our best guess based upon what we know now. One can only assume that the future is likely to be much harder than any of us would have wanted. With that in mind maybe option 4 from your list would be best.

Whatever you decide, I wish you and your family the very best.

I apologies for not kicking in my two cents sooner but I am sufuring from a flu/cold. I understand if you want to take a break. I have been spending way to much time on this thing sitting in front of me. This sight is the first one I go to every the morning. I really enjoy hearing the truth not only from you but all who care to throw something out here. Its so tough anymore to really figure out what the truth is when only having access to the corp. mainstream. It seems they start with the event and go down hill from there.

It is scary knowing that Bushco may well try another neocon disater to further take control of this country. I guess he is waiting for Halburton to finish there stocade work before proceeding.

Here is something that is strange and that is here in Nebraska. We have a legedary football coach
(Dr. Tom Osborne) who has just changed to a repug to challenge the incumbent Govenor. Now Dr Tom is one of the most respected people in the state and honest. And will be backed by the second richest person in the U S (Warren Buffet) So what do I think sheesh I don't know. I do know that the person in office was appointed not elected. I hope that this coming election in not all about abortion and gay rights where the dems are boxed in with those two issues. I am not saying Im against them. There are just much bigger fish to fry.

I know also that corporate funding is a major problem in getting the right person in. I suspect also that the dems are not talking about where they will be making a stand so as not to give the repugs a pre-fabricated out. And they are not much better then the repugs but they are a lesser of two evils at this point. I fear the real issues will never meet the light of day. It seems that the powers to be need to get the Iran thing started before the 06 elections are completed, that is if they don't steel these as well.

Don't give up Cyclone

Rockpicker,

I was going to let your quotation go by because replying diverts attention away from the subject in hand but then why not?

The Duke of Wellington who beat Napoleon just down the road from where I am now was a great social entertainer and after dinner would entertain his guests with war stories, moving salt, pepper, knives and forks around the table to represent battle formations. After one such story, a guest said “Although you were ultimately in charge I don’t believe it was you who actually won that battle. It was General Smith who sent a messenger Corporal Jones to Lieutenant Brown to ask for information and Corporal Jones on riding over the hill saw that the enemy was about to charge and courageously rode across their battle lines diverting the charge. And further Sergeant Green seeing what was going on alerted Lieutenant Brown who was quickly able to mount a counter charge whilst the enemy was in disarray and win the day, so who was it who really won the battle”.
Wellington thought for a minute and said,”I have no idea if it was General Smith or Corporal Jones or Lieutenant Brown or Sergeant Green who won the battle but I know for sure who would have bloody lost it”.
By the same token I know who will loose Iraq and probably USA too.

From Belgium

& Cyclone, this last topic has brought mega support out into the open. It would be a shame if it was to totally fall in the water but that is a very selfish viewpoint.

Cyclone,

All of the most influential people in our history needed their time.

Some, like Washington, went home to their farm where they rested and were sometimes called again as the need arose. Some, like Jefferson, went home to take a new approach. They made a contribution to providence as they were willing they let others do the work and lent support to them provately. Some others, like Franklin, left their active role and moved behind the scenes. They never really left, but just changed the face of who was speaking.

What you decide is your choice. Democracy is not neccessarily the best choice here. Public opinion is a dangerous place, and shaping it a tiring chore. You must do what you feel is in your best interests (but you knew I would say that, didn't you?). You have paid your price. You have made your contribution.

Whatever your choice, I support you. If you stay it will be fun to read, whether it is you or a delegate. If you leave, then someone else must take up the responsibility. Maybe many of your readers will move forward in your wake. Maybe some already are. The more, the merrier.

Hard decision, but one well earned. Thanks for your writing, and hopes of more...

You have created one of the few sites out there that shows the truth and not the lies that corporate America puts out there like on FOX news. Please don’t shut down the site. We need you man. Take a break; post an article once a week, twice a month, but PLEASE don’t shut down the site. I have learned so much from you and all the folks that post on this site. I have also posted some comments myself in the past as anonymous. I have also passed this link unto friends so that they can read real news articles and not fluff like other sites out there. Whatever decision you take I will respect it, but please don’t abandon us sir! We need all the reporters like yourself that we can get to spread the word out there.

I too have been reading this blog daily since I first discovered it. I try to keep up with current events and reading this blog has helped me to look and think more deeply about the news that I read elsewhere. I feel better equippped to see the real motivation behind the actions of people in government since I began reading Cyclone's analyses.

Thanks for providing what you have Cyclone. I think we're all better off for it. If you choose to retire from this we'll still have gained something of value.

My vote is to keep this site going with guest essays and the periodic Cyclone analysis that will keep everyone coming back for more.

wish i was younger rockpicker, would come over to your side of the mountian and help you pick rocks.

RP,

I need some of that Dubliner cheese, whatever the heck that is. It might help "heal me."

Amber,

We're okay on postings, no worry there. They would keep us open on comments alone. Thanks for the offer to help.

Austin man,

Thanks for the advice. Before my 2nd back surgery, when I ran distance (30K was longest) I always had to remember to tone it down for the first 5 miles. Hardest thing for me to do, but great advice. Thanks,

Sean,

I happen to know Tom Osborne. I'm not sure I would want him representing me in anything other than a "stiff" contest. The personality of the sole of a shoe. I hope you are feeling better and thanks for all of your support.

I'm right here dragging brush where I've been for the last three days! That Ice storm that knocked out all the electrical and phone lines played merry hell with all the trees and I got a shitload of trees! (had a shitload of trees) Now my long suffering wife with the infinite patience has decreed that there is lawn under that brushpile and she wants to see it again!

Gotta do it! She knows where all the guns are hidden and I sleep with her!
